The targeted feedback of physiological data offers a wide range of benefits, including Biofeedback and Neurofeedback, which we would like to explore in this article.

1. Biofeedback and neurofeedback for progress monitoring: precise monitoring and ensuring success

Continuous monitoring of the progress of therapy and training is essential to ensure that the chosen interventions actually deliver the desired results. Biofeedback plays a crucial role in this regard by providing valuable insights for both therapists and patients.

Objective measurement of success

Biofeedback enables therapists to assess the current progress of therapy immediately and analyse it over the long term by recording objective physiological parameters. The software (e.g. Biolife) also offers the option of generating detailed statistical analyses, which are of great benefit not only in practical application but also in research.

Diana Sicher Fritsch, Head of the „Denk-Art“ Mental Centre at the Mental Spa Hotel Fritsch am Berg, explains:

„Biofeedback has become a quality assurance tool at the Mental Centre of our ****Mental Spa Hotel. Only scientific analyses can objectively demonstrate to the client the changes brought about by training or coaching. This means that, as a coach, one is no longer reliant solely on subjective perception.“

The Elfriede Stückle, qualified psychologist The SIGMA Centre reports on a real-life example:

„(…) A subject in his mid-fifties with a somatoform pain disorder, which was accompanied by elevated tension levels, was to use the biofeedback method to learn how to reduce or regulate his arousal levels. To this end, I primarily used breathing exercises and relaxation imagery or videos. As the subject was very compulsive and performance-oriented, he also practised breathing exercises outside the biofeedback sessions. Within a short space of time, he was able to reduce his respiratory rate to just four breaths per minute. However, biofeedback revealed that, whilst his breathing had slowed down, his overall tension levels had increased, as indicated by parameters such as heart rate and skin conductance. This can be explained by the fact that the subject put too much pressure on himself to achieve the low rate. As no positive effect of the exercise was observed – in the sense that the other parameters did not change over time – the subject’s individual breathing rate, which was associated with the greatest possible relaxation, was determined in consultation with him (…)“

Multimodality: Holistic recording of physiological data

Another key advantage of biofeedback is its multimodality – that is, the simultaneous monitoring of various physiological parameters such as temperature, skin conductance, heart rate, electromyogram and respiration. This comprehensive analysis ensures that improvements in one area are not overshadowed by undesirable changes in another.

2. Biofeedback and self-efficacy: From passive recipient to active participant

A common problem faced by many patients, particularly those with chronic conditions, is a feeling of helplessness. Biofeedback offers valuable support in this regard by helping patients to regain a sense of control and self-efficacy.

Restoring self-efficacy

Many patients report that biofeedback enables them to regain control over their physical reactions for the first time. Biofeedback therapy is therefore not only a valuable tool in the field of diagnostics, but also in psychotherapy and in the participants“ own self-awareness.”

Active participation in the healing process

Through biofeedback, patients do not merely undergo passive treatment; instead, they are actively involved in the healing process. They learn how they can actively influence their symptoms through targeted exercises and techniques. This approach makes biofeedback an effective tool that transforms patients from passive recipients into active participants in their own health.

3. Using the biofeedback device, we can immediately identify which relaxation technique is most effective for each individual when dealing with stress. After writing my dissertation on this topic, I realised just how effective the use of biofeedback can be in testing and training procedures.“.

Conclusion: Biofeedback as the key to successful therapy

Biofeedback offers numerous benefits, making it a valuable addition to therapy, diagnosis and prevention. The objective measurement of physiological parameters provides both therapists and patients with a high degree of certainty that the chosen course of treatment is effective.
