(…) A subject in his mid-fifties with a somatoform pain disorder, which was accompanied by elevated tension levels, was to use the biofeedback method to learn how to reduce or regulate his arousal levels. To this end, I primarily used breathing exercises and relaxation imagery or videos. As the subject was very compulsive and performance-oriented, he also practised breathing exercises outside the biofeedback sessions. Within a short space of time, he was able to reduce his respiratory rate to just four breaths per minute. However, biofeedback revealed that, whilst his breathing had slowed down, his overall tension levels had increased, as indicated by parameters such as heart rate and skin conductance. This can be explained by the fact that the subject put too much pressure on himself to achieve the low rate. As no positive effect of the exercise was observed – in the sense that the other parameters did not change over time – the subject’s individual breathing rate, which was associated with the greatest possible relaxation, was determined in consultation with him (…)“
