Peak Performance: A report based on practical experience

 

Both in my work as a clinical and health psychologist and in my role as a sports psychologist, I have been using biofeedback regularly and quite successfully as a treatment method for some time now.

Theresa Hornich, MSc, talks about her experience with biofeedback and peak performanceI have had particularly positive experiences with athletes through the use of biofeedback in the field of diagnostics. Through targeted stress and strain analyses, it is possible to assess how the body reacts to stress and psychological strain. Subsequently, appropriate methods – tailored to the individual – can be identified for personalised stress management, subjective relaxation or even activation.

The main advantage lies in the fact that, through biofeedback measurements, athletes receive direct and immediate feedback on bodily processes; this not only leads to faster learning progress but also allows the appropriateness of the chosen method to be confirmed. Athletes immediately notice that the relaxation techniques they use have a direct impact on bodily processes. This aspect is subsequently of great importance for the successful application of training methods aimed at self-regulation.

When practising self-regulation, many athletes express a desire to be able to consciously achieve an optimal personal balance between tension and relaxation through personal responsibility. This, in turn, enables them to have a positive influence on their own bodies and to be fully focused when it matters most during competition.

Although practising self-regulation often takes some time – particularly if it is to be applied effectively in high-pressure situations and at the crucial moment – my athletes have already seen significant improvements as a result. In particular, when it comes to dealing with nervousness or competition anxiety – or a drop in performance under pressure – the athletes have already reported many positive experiences. They particularly appreciate the ability to know methods for improving their awareness of and control over their own bodies, and to have the effectiveness of these methods measurably demonstrated through biofeedback. The knowledge that there are suitable methods enabling self-directed control over the body successfully counteracts a loss of control in sport.

I have also used biofeedback in the rehabilitation of sports injuries and prior to a return to competitive sport. This enables muscular imbalances or compensatory postures to be identified and addressed in collaboration with the athlete. In this context, the athletes in question mainly report that, through the use of biofeedback, they have regained confidence in their own bodies and, as a result, feel physically and mentally ready to compete again.

I also believe that the use of biofeedback can promote general well-being and the ability to recover. This also has a positive effect on sporting performance, as only well-rested, happy and content athletes can realise their full sporting potential.

To sum up, I have already gained experience with biofeedback in various sporting disciplines and greatly appreciate the positive effects of this treatment method within the field of sports psychology. Both my athletes and I really enjoy working with biofeedback and can wholeheartedly recommend it.
